Beta Alpha Shares Holiday Cheer and Celebrates Birthday of Longest Member!
On December 9, 2017, Beta Alpha members met at The Clare's 53rd Floor, which has been nominated for prestigious Awards in Architecture and Design. Members enjoyed a breakfast buffet, holiday music and conversation against breathtaking views of the city. After breakfast, Lois Schmidt was surprised with a birthday cake and song in celebration of her ninety eighth birthday. Initiated in 1966, Lois is Beta Alpha's longest and oldest member. It truly was an honor for all to celebrate this special occasion with Lois. Members enjoyed birthday cake while co - presidents Gale Andersen and Patty Walsh led a brief , yet productive business meeting. In the President's report, members were encouraged to consider becoming officers for the 2018 - 20 biennium. Gale and Patty shared the benefits of taking on the challenge of this leadership role and offered their support to all those who might consider this challenge. Members also discussed and voted upon recipients for Beta Alpha's annual donation to charitable organizations as well as a recipient for the traditional hat / scarf/ mitten collection.
Both Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago and the Greater Chicago Food Depository were selected to receive financial contributions. Komensky Elementary School in Berwyn, where Megan Peterson teaches special education was selected as the recipient for the collection of cold weather necessities.
Member Sarah Erekson Presents
at November Meeting
On November 18, 2017, members met at Hackney's on Lake in Glenview. After lunch and a brief business meeting, Beta Alpha members were engaged in a presentation by Sarah Erekson, Librarian for the City of Chicago, Chicago Public Library. Sarah works in the Government Publications Department at the Harold Washington Library. Sarah shared resources for educators from the Government Publishing Office. Members enjoyed learning about the program that "Keeps America Informed" and brings government information to their fingertips. Sarah shared resources for kids and newcomers such as "Ben's Guide to the US Government." Members each received a folder of resources including access information for:
Sarah was quite skilled in sharing her knowledge while engaging members in discussion. All agreed that Sarah's presentation would make an excellent addition to the Lambda State Convention. Sarah was encouraged to submit a proposal to present.
